All About Sage

Sage has been used for CENTURIES to cleanse and purify spaces & individuals. The process of smudging also gives off a powerful calming effect. It's believed that the smoke from burning sage can help clear negative energy and promote a sense of peace and balance. If you pay attention, you’ll hear about the benefits of smuding & sage quite often on TV and in the movies. New & Old - and healing crystals are worn by celebrities - of all religions - around their necks and wrists on a daily basis. There is a reason for this...... To sage, also known as smudging, is a ritual that involves burning dried sage leaves. This ancient practice has been used by various cultures as a way to cleanse and purify a space or a person. The smoke created by burning the sage is believed to remove any negative energy that may be present. This method has gained popularity in recent years as a way to promote positivity and improve the overall well-being of individuals. So, if you're feeling weighed down by negative energy, try saging and experience its powerful effects. The simple act of lighting a sage bundle and allowing the fragrant smoke to envelop you or your surroundings can bring a sense of peace and balance to your life. Bonfires and incense sticks are also commonly used for smudging, but sage is considered the most effective due to its strong aroma and natural properties. Incorporating this practice into your routine can make a significant impact on your physical and mental health, and create a space of positivity and harmony.

SAGE and Smudging

Some people like to smudge when:
  • First move into a new space
  • When they're moving out of a space
  • When they are transitioning in work/life
  • After a divorce
  • After an argument or fight
  • In hotel rooms ~ vacation rentals, Air BNB, visiting family
  • After spending time with a negative person
  • After buying something at a thrift store or antique store
  • When feeling OFF - stressed, too tired, over-whelmed
Before you start:
  • Make sure you clean your space before hand. This helps the sage travel better and cuts down on the time you have to spend in each room.
  • Turn off all the noise; major electronics (tv, radio, silence your phone). It's best that you have a clear mind before you sage your home or office.
  • If possible but not required; Open the windows or door in each room (weather permitting). It also helps if the negative energy collected has somewhere to go (it's released out into the fresh air).
  • Have a heat-proof container ready to catch the ashes of the sage bundle. Abalone shells are very popular but you can use anything that works like an ashtray.
  • Try to sage in the morning. If you sage another time during the day, the energy may be more dense. In the morning is when the "energy of the day (traffic, negative thoughts, etc)" hasn't settled, and I find it to be the best time to complete the process.
We recommend burning sage in the morning. This is the optimal time to cleanse and clear your space as the "energy of the day" (such as the heavy traffic and negative thoughts) has not yet settled. By starting your day with a sage ritual, you can avoid the buildup of dense energy throughout the day. By performing sage in the morning, you are setting the foundation for a positive and productive day ahead. Additionally, starting your day with a sage ritual can also help improve your overall well-being. Not only does it clear the space, but it can also clear your mind and reduce stress and anxiety. This allows you to start your day feeling refreshed and focused, which can enhance your productivity and creativity.
Set an intention before you sage your home, office, or yourself. The sage is going to do the cleansing, but set an intention for what you would like to get out of each session. Are you using sage to heal, to grow, to clear your mind, to invite in new experiences, or more abundance? Creating a mantra and expressing gratitude to the Great Spirit for helping you clear your space of old and negative energy is an effective way to bring positive energy back into your surroundings. Set the intention.
Examples on what to say during the smuding process
Take a moment and say something like one of these of make up something completely on your own:
Releasing negative energy:
- "Thank you Great Spirit, for assisting me in releasing negative energy, blocked energy, stuck energy, and negative thoughts. May this space be filled with feelings of joy, love, happiness, and harmony once again." - I release all negative energy, attachments, and stagnant vibrations from this space." - May this smoke cleanse and purify this space, leaving it filled with light and positive energy." - I ask for any and all negative energy to be transmuted into the light and love of the divine." Inviting positive energy: - I welcome love, peace, joy, and harmony into this space." - May this space be filled with blessings, abundance, and positive intentions." - I invite in clarity, creativity, and compassion to fill this space." General prayers and mantras: - "May this smoke cleanse and purify, bringing balance and harmony to this space." - "I am grateful for the cleansing power of this sacred plant and the positive energy it brings." - "May this space be a haven of light, love, and healing."

While it does not need to be an exact phrase, the intention remains the same – to show appreciation for the help received and invite positive energy to return. By incorporating this ritual into your routine, you can create a harmonious and uplifting environment in which you can thrive both personally and professionally. Allow the Great Spirit to guide and support you, and the results will surely be beneficial. Remember to always show gratitude and stay open to the positive changes that will come from regularly practicing this mantra. Quick Tip: Light a tealight candle in each room. This helps to relight the sage if the smoke dwindles.
Let's Begin!
How To Sage (Smudge) Your Home, Office, And Yourself (Step-By-Step)
  • Light the thick end of the sage and blow out the fire once it produces smoke. The smoke is what does the clearing.
  • Start in one corner of the room and move the smoke up and down. Some people like to use a feather to fan the smoke. You can also use your hand.
  • Move to each of the other corners in the room.
  • After thoroughly cleansing the corners of your designated room with sage, it is important to move to the center and continue the process throughout the rest of the room. Be sure to carefully pass the smoke over all furniture, including the bed, couches, pillows, dressers, clothing and any other pieces of decorative or sentimental value. Don't forget to also focus on electronics, as they are often overlooked but still hold negative energy. Moving the smoke around the windowsills and doorframe is also crucial in cleansing the space to its fullest. This will ensure a peaceful and positive atmosphere within the room, leaving behind any lingering negativity. By following these steps, you can create a renewed sense of balance and harmony in your space.
  • Once you feel that you've done enough saging in that room, it's then time to move on to the next room and repeat the steps above.
  • Be sure to express gratitude to the Great Spirit while saging each room. This powerful act will assist in clearing your energy and physical space. Additionally, remember to recite your chosen mantra in each area of your home as you move along. Furthermore, you can also consider inviting your spirit guides or angels to join you in the clearing process. With their divine assistance, the process can be even more effective. Make sure to remain focused and grounded throughout the ritual in order to fully benefit from its energetic cleansing properties. By following these steps, you are well on your way to creating a harmonious and rejuvenating space for yourself and those around you.
  • Once you're done with each room, go ahead and sage each entrance to your home (front, back, and side doors). You can do that by just moving the smoke around the door frames.
  • That will complete the process.
It is crucial to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished before storing your sacred sage bundle. For optimal results, allow for a cooling period of thirty to forty-five minutes before putting it away. Handling the ashes is an important step, and there are two ways to discard them in a respectful manner. One option is to take the ashes outside and bury them, while the other is to spread them on the ground. Whichever method you choose, it is imperative to double check that the ashes are completely cooled before proceeding. This practice demonstrates reverence for the sacred sage and honors its power. That's it! Some people like to light some scented candles and sometimes play some gentle music at the end of each session. Others burn essential oils or spray essentials oils to complete the process. Again, you can use this article as a guide, but use your intuition when it comes to your ritual. Use the methods that resonate with you, your time, and your space.
