The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1965. Renowned for their eclectic fusion of rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, reggae, world music, and psychedelia, they became iconic for extended live improvisations. Originating amid the 1960s Bay Area counterculture, the band’s founding lineup included Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. Over three decades, members like Mickey Hart, Brent Mydland, and Vince Welnick contributed to the evolving sound. Despite only one Top-40 hit, "Touch of Grey" (1987), their devoted fanbase—known as "Deadheads"—propelled them to become one of the highest-grossing touring acts.

Following Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead continued to perform under various names and configurations. Notable projects include The Other Ones, the first major touring reunion featuring Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and others in 1998, 2000, and 2002. In 2003, the group adopted the name The Dead, touring intermittently until 2009. Bob Weir and Phil Lesh then formed Furthur in 2009, focusing on classic Grateful Dead songs alongside new material. Dead & Company launched in 2015, with Weir, Hart, and musicians like John Mayer, bringing the music to a new generation. Phil Lesh & Friends and Bob Weir’s RatDog each offered unique, rotating lineups performing Grateful Dead repertoire and original work. Additionally, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann revived their percussion ensemble, Rhythm Devils, for tours in 2006 and 2010, while Kreutzmann also led Billy & the Kids, featuring a rotating cast of musicians.
